Zealand reports petrelintide phase 2 results in type 2 diabetes: up to 9.2% weight loss at 28 weeks

| Trial results

Zealand Pharma announced topline results on October 7, 2026 from ZUPREME-2, a phase 2b trial of petrelintide, an investigational once-weekly amylin medicine, in 220 U.S. adults with overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes. At 28 weeks, average weight loss was up to 9.2% on petrelintide, compared with 2.0% on placebo. Blood sugar (HbA1c) fell by up to 0.65%, while it rose by 0.23% on placebo.

Stopping treatment because of stomach-related side effects was 1.9% on petrelintide and 1.7% on placebo, and Zealand reported no unexpected safety signals. The announcement did not give the amounts used or results for each group, and Zealand says full results will be presented at a scientific conference.

Worth knowing: These are company-reported topline results, not a peer-reviewed paper, and only the best-performing group is given. It is a mid-stage trial with a short follow-up. Petrelintide is not approved anywhere, and larger phase 3 trials, now recruiting, are needed.
